Calgary, AB – December 21, 2018
– Members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers wanting to gain expertise on sand control design are turning to experts at RGL. The accredited international member organization representing more than 158,000 E&P professionals across 143 countries has partnered with RGL to offer a one-day training course entitled Sand Control for Heavy Oil Development.

The course reviews fundamental sand control design for heavy oil development with a focus on cold primary production and thermal application. It goes on to detail the mechanisms, applications, and challenges of the various sand control options in both vertical and horizontal applications. It mainly focuses on a practical project requiring the participants to apply what they have learned by selecting, designing and presenting the most appropriate sand control completion for several case study wells for both cold primary and thermal application.
The course also reviews several field failure examples and case studies to guide engineers to better understand the factors contributing to sand control failure and how they can operate their wells to understand and minimize their risks.

Specific topics include:

  • Thermal design considerations
  • Failure mechanisms and best practices
  • Mechanical integrity
  • Life cycle integrity assessment
  • Well completion and its impact

Three of RGL’s sand control experts are delivering the course. Mahdi Mahmoudi, PhD, is RGL’s Petroleum/Geomechanics Engineer who has been involved in sand control design and evaluation testing in conventional and thermal production for over a decade. Jeff Cyre, M.Eng., P.Eng., is an RGL Drilling and Completions Engineer with over 15 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry. Rounding out the instructor team is Vahid Fattahpour, PhD. RGL’s Research and Development Manager has been involved in sand control design and testing in conventional and thermal production for over 10 years in North America and the Middle East.

This training is geared towards petroleum engineers and production managers who wish to strengthen their technical understanding of sand control and to make confident purchasing decisions. For attending the one-day course, participants will be awarded 0.8 CEUs (Continuing Education Units).
