Calgary, AB – November 21, 2018 – The heavy-oil industry is turning to RGL’s expertise on flow control devices, as Flow Control Engineering Manager Dr. Da Zhu speaks on the SAGD Wellbore 2.0: Re-thinking Well Design for SAGD Technical Panel in Calgary tomorrow. Dr. Zhu was invited to share his input along with fellow industry experts from Suncor, Nexen, and Baker Hughes GE.
Since the first successful demonstration of steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) over two decades ago, there have been many technological advances in the world. Since the underground test facility (UTF) SAGD pilot started in 1994, SAGD wellbore completions have evolved. Technology advances have improved surface and infill drilling techniques, dog leg severities, and electrical submersible pump run lives in high temperature applications. Advanced instrumentation and flow control devices for steam distribution and choking are also key innovations.
As the world radically changes with drones, automation, artificial intelligence, and battery technology, we are left asking what will the SAGD wellbore of the future look like? As economic pressures increase and as the technology toolbox grows, SAGD operators have started to reconsider the current wellbore design.
In this technical panel hosted by the Canadian Heavy Oil Association, SAGD industry representatives discuss how they have remained competitive through extended reach drilling, multilateral wells, improved sand control, flow control devices (FCDs) and consistent design.
Dr. Zhu will discuss how RGL has created customer solutions addressing low production, high steam/oil ratio, and easier well operations by thinking outside of the box. He will be joined on the panel by Shirish Deshpande of Suncor, Zim Okafor of Nexen, and Rocco Cleveland of Baker Hughes GE.
