RGL’s Sand Control Fundamentals Training Course offered at upcoming SPE Virtual Thermal Well Integrity and Design Symposium

Attendees of the Virtual Thermal Well Integrity and Design Symposium wanting to gain expertise on sand control design are turning to experts at RGL. The Society of Petroleum Engineers, an accredited international member organization representing more than 153,000 E&P professionals across 143 countries, has partnered with RGL to offer a one-day training course entitled Sand Control Fundamentals.

This full-day virtual course is scheduled for Jan. 25, and reviews fundamental sand control design for oil development. It goes on to detail the mechanisms, applications, and challenges of various sand control options in both vertical and horizontal applications. It mainly focuses on a practical project requiring the participant to apply what they have learned by selecting, designing, and presenting the most appropriate sand control completion for several case study wells for both cold primary and thermal applications.

Specific topics include:

  • Why Do We Need Sand Control? Consider the potential impact of sand production over the life of a well and the consequent importance of sand control.
  • Review of Geomechanics and Geoscience: This section reviews the fundamentals of geomechanics and geoscience for heavy oil developments.
  • Corrosion: Review the basics of material selection for sand control and field examples of screen/liner failure due to corrosion.
  • Erosion: Review various erosional models and their application to sand control design, and review of field examples of screen/liner erosion.
  • Plugging: Discuss the plugging mechanism and show examples of different screen/liner plugging from extracted sand control screen/liner.
  • Mechanical Integrity: Discuss various well integrity designs and considerations.

Two of RGL’s subject matter experts are delivering the course. Dr. Mahdi Mahmoudi, PhD, is RGL’s Sand Control Engineering Manager who has been involved in sand control design and evaluation testing in conventional and thermal production for over a decade. Also instructing is Dr. Vahid Fattahpour, PhD. RGL’s Research and Development Manager has been involved in sand control design and testing in conventional and thermal production for over 10 years in North America and the Middle East.

This training is geared towards petroleum engineers and production managers who wish to strengthen their technical understanding of sand control and to make confident purchasing decisions. For attending the one-day course, participants will be awarded 0.8 CEUs (Continuing Education Units).
